Working in 3D

Basic Concepts

Orbit - use Orbit to look around

Zoom- to get in closer

Pan  move around the object

Three Button Scroll Wheel Mouse - use the wheel to zoom in and out

Step One

Draw simple shape

- use pencil tool

Use the Pull Tool to expand the shape into a 3D Form (Shape)

Key Points

  • Draws shape

  • Pull into 3D Form

  • Repeat the process

  • Everything in Sketchup is either a Surface or an Edge

  • Every surface is a closed shape. Erase one edge the surface is lost. The in-complete surface will need to be "healed" to become a surface

Drawing Rules

  1. Draw a closed loop of edges to create a shape

    • the loop of edges needs to be coplanar (On the same plan)

    • Infering - hoover for a couple of seconds to tell Sketchup where you want lines to line up

  2. Watch the direction axis and use inferring to line up edges

  3. Learn and use infererence points

    • end points are green

    • mid points are cyan (bluish)

    • other edges are red

    • crossed edges are black

  4. Always draw to and from existing edges

  5. Don't draw new edges over exiasting edges

Accuracy in Sketchup

  1. Begin an action:Push and Pull Shapes

  2. Type in a value

  3. Press the Enter key

    1. Type 3' for 3 feet      3" for 3 inches    3cm for 3 centimeters    3m for 3 meters

Move Tool    You can move

  • End points

  • Edges

  • Surfaces

  • Selected Entities

  • Grouped Objects

Select Tool

Use the Select Tool to select more than edges
